We've been dying to show Richard Garriott, creator of the Ultima series and basically the father of modern MMOs, Second Skin. He was out of town during the SXSW premiere last year, and we'd been trying to figure out where to send the DVD for awhile. A few months ago we had the privilege of shooting a short film about Garriott for Vice Magazine's channel VBS.TV. While there we handed Garriott the DVD. He wrote us yesterday to tell us how much he enjoyed it.

For most people this isn't a surprise, but since we're refreshing the site I figured it was about time we got the facts straight here. We are a small company called Pure West who works out of Astoria. Everyday I talk the long walk down to my basement, and everyone walks in groggily.

We work long hours sometimes and normal hours others. Recently, the days seem to be stretching later and later into the night. It's okay though if we weren't working together we'd probably be hanging out together.

Peter just accomplished something over a year in the making.  The product of bucketloads of blood, sweat and tears.  Today marks more or less the end of this Herculean feat that I think 99% of producers could have never accomplished.  But Peter weathered the storm and saw this thing through.

I'll spare you the legal mumbo jumbo and instead ask, if you see Peter on the street, give him a little kiss on the cheek.  That dude deserves it.  For he is a golden god.

Did anyone realize that someone had a patent out for virtual worlds?!

I didn't.  I wonder if the head honchos at all of our favorite MMORPG companies did?

Looks like Worlds.com has the patent, and is suing the pants off NC Soft- for starters!  It's ready to go up against all the big guys, including WoW and Second Life.

Wow, copyright infringement feels so nineties...

Ian Sparks from Daily Mail reports on a pretty damn intense story:

An internet computer game has been condemned as being as addictive as cocaine after a teenager who played it 24 hours non-stop had convulsions.

World of Warcraft has been hugely successful in capturing the imagination of players by drawing them into a virtual universe of battles and quests.

However, it is at the centre of a growing problem of computer game addiction.

Hi folks- it's been a minute.  In upgrading our site I lost the ability to blog until Juan showed me a secret passage.  Now everything's peachy and I'll get you up to speed quickly.

The short version: we lucked out with our distributor.  Apart from being generally awesome, L---- is really allowing us to take an active role in the process of getting our baby out into the world.  Once a week we have a conference call- Peter, Juan and I on our end, and a huge chunk of their staff on their end.

Nintendo, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Nin-ten-do: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Nin. Ten. Do.

In my lifetime, if there were a nostalgic image that could sum up pretty much all the good feelings and bad feelings about my childhood, it would be the original Nintendo Entertainment System. NES for short. Ninnie Ninnie Tennie Tennie Doey Doey to my friend John Martin from across the cul-de-sac.
